Dr. Md. Abdus Shahid was elected Member of Parliament for the seventh time on the nomination of Bangladesh Awami League in the 12th National Parliament Election held on January 07, 2024 and was appointed as the Minister of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Government on January 11, 2024.
Dr. Md. Abdus Shaheed MP was born on January 01, 1948 in Siddheshwarpur village of Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar district in a noble Muslim family. His father late Md. Abdul Bari and mother late Sajeda Khanam.
Md. Abdus Shaheed passed SSC with honors from Kalika Prasad High School of Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar District and HSC from Madanmohan College, Sylhet. He obtained his M.Com (Management) degree in 1971 from Chittagong University.
Later, Jahangirnagar University awarded him a PhD degree in 2018 for his significant contribution to anthropological research. The beginning of his professional life through the great teaching profession. He served as Vice Principal in Kamalganj Public University of Moulvibazar from 1973 to January 1991 AD.
Dr. Md. Abdus Shahid involved himself in politics from his school days. During the Pakistan period, he actively participated in various movements against the military dictatorship of Ayub Khan and against the exploitation and persecution of East Pakistanis by West Pakistanis. In 1965, Sylhet Madan Mohan College was elected as Natya and Pramod Secretary in Chhatra League’s panel and in 1965 he became Acting G,S. In 1966-1968 he served as Social Welfare Secretary of Sylhet District Chhatra League. Directly participated in 1966 six point and 11 point movement of 1969 and all subsequent movements as a member of Sylhet Zilla Sangram Parishad. He served as Sports Secretary of Chittagong University Students’ Union and Vice-President of Chittagong University Chhatra League in 1969-1972.
He played a brave and glorious role as an active fighter in the Great Liberation War of 1971. During the Liberation War, his father and five brothers were brutally tortured by the Pakistani forces. After independence in 1973, he became active again in Awami League politics. He was a presidium member of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League Central Committee in 1991-2000 and president of Moulvibazar District Awami League in 2006-2017.
Dr. Md. Abdus Shahid has been elected member of parliament for Moulvibazar-4 parliamentary seat (Srimangal and Kamalganj upazilas) seven consecutive times since 1991 as a nominated candidate of Bangladesh Awami League. Hence, he continues to play a glorious role as an experienced parliamentarian. He served with great distinction as the Whip of the National Assembly of Bangladesh in 1996-2001, Chief Whip of the Opposition in 2001-2006 and Chief Whip in 2009-2014.
Dr. Md. Abdus Shahid served as president and member of various committees of the National Parliament. He served as Chairman of the Parliament Committee in the Ninth National Parliament, Chairman of the Committee on Bangladesh Government Commitments in the Tenth National Parliament and Chairman of the Committee on Estimated Accounts in the Eleventh National Parliament. Also, he has been the Committee on Public Accounts at various times in the last 6 Parliaments; Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Finance; Committee on Rules of Procedure; Advisory Committee on Actions; Committee on Special Rights; Petitions Committee; Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Home Affairs; Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Labor and Manpower Affairs; Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Public Administration; Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Education; He was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
Dr. Shahid is the President of Bangladesh-Nepal Parliamentary Alliance Group in Bangladesh National Parliament and Convener of ‘My Constituency Data Platform’.
As Dr. Shahid has established many educational institutions, he is also involved in the management of many educational institutions. He is the Vice-Principal of Mohammad Abdus Shahid College, Srimangal, Abdul Bari Mulfat Uddin Hafizia Ibtedayi Madrasa, Kamalganj, Sajeda-Bari Shishusadan and Founder President of Dwarika Pal Mahila College, Srimangal.
At present he is the Syndicate Member of Sylhet Agricultural University. He is a former member of Dhaka University, National University and Shahjalal Science and Technology University Senate.
Dr. Abdus Shahid has engaged himself in many national and international professional, social and service activities. He is a member of the National Council of Freedom Fighters, a member of the Bangladesh Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (BAPPD), a member of the National Board of Directors of the National Legal Aid Agency and a member of the National Advisory Council of Justice. He is a life member of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Bangladesh National Blind Welfare Organization and Bangladesh Association for Prevention and Treatment of Liver Diseases. Former Vice President of Bangladesh Parliament Members Support Group (BPMSG) on Prevention of HIV/AIDS and Human Trafficking. Besides, he is the president of Uttara Welfare Society of Dhaka.
In personal life Dr.Shahid is married and father of one son and two daughters. His wife Umm Kulsoom is a housewife. Son Margub Morshed Romeo lives in Germany, a businessman by profession. Eldest daughter Umme Farzana Srimangal Upazila Awami League Women Affairs Secretary. Younger daughter Umm Marjana is working as a lecturer in the Department of Economics at East-West University.
